My last random topic post before i decide to make this blog not so public anymore. Those who want me to add them to the 'approved list' of my blog, please tell me okay(:
Being a student Being a student for the past 14 years of my life, I have learnt that there's always more to learn, especially when it reaches a point when I think that I've learnt everything that one could possibly learn in a lifetime. I admit that learning is not an easy journey, having the ups and downs just like any other aspect of life, but through it all, I've gained knowledge, wisdom and the ability to discern what is deemed appropriate for the society i live in. The ethics are not taught explicitly, but from experiences encountered. School provides us with academic knowledge, some other social ethics that are deemed appropriate by the environment we live in. Being a student also includes social life, friends and family. If school was just it, then we will be bookworms, not students. Students interact with the people in their schools, their families and teachers. A student not only learns intellectual knowledge, but also life lessons that will allow one to hopefully develop and grow up into a decent and civilised part of society. Now, what defines a decent and civilsied person? I do not actually think that there is a standard answer to this, as it is subjective to various perceptions, to various cultures and the society that you are living in.
I think, in Singapore, what we need is to be well-educated, able to act quickly and communicate effectively with people. This may seem like any normal person, but making the right and wise decision s what sets each individual apart. Schools, families usually emphasize on being a good citizen, not to break the law, etc. A student, being young and having a vibrant mind, ought to think of ways to contribute back to Singapore. At least for myself, I think that there are ample opportunities for education here and credit goes to the efficiency of the ministry and government. A student should learn to show gratitude, to be humble and not boast about his or her talents because if not for what the ministry has to offer us, we may not have what we have. Though tough, when we grow up, we know that we'll enjoy the fruits of our labour even more, and that it will be true treasures for us.
Students should be willing to persevere in hardship as society is changing and there is almost no time to rest. If we want to survive in society in the ner future, students should start trying to go through hardship, not always basking in their own comfort. In a very comfortable environment to develop ourselves, Singaporean students ought to be thankful for such a caring government that always tries to spare a thought for the people, putting others before self. If they did not, then we wouldn't have airconditioned classrooms with decent furniture, science laboratories with excellent equipment to aid our education process, to stretch our potential and make us stand out from the rest of the world.
